Emotional scenes at NT child murder case

A tearful Northern Territory man told his family he loved them during his first court appearance since being charged for murdering his infant son.

Police arrested Brian James Baird on Thursday, alleging he fatally assaulted his child at a home in Darwin's northern suburbs in 2015.

The 36-year-old sat crying with his head in his hands at Darwin Local Court on Monday, while a dozen of his relatives and friends also wept.

Baird said "I love you" to his supporters while being escorted from the dock, with the case adjourned until November 29.
