NT guard turned prisoner wants to take baby to jail

A disgraced NT prison guard is pushing to be able to take her six-month-old baby to jail with her when she is sentenced for a dozen criminal charges.

Sarah Dawn Rudd has asked the court whether her breastfed baby can live with her in the under-construction correctional centre outside of Darwin.

Rudd breastfed her baby in the dock last week, the NT News reports.

Her lawyer is pushing for her to be jailed in Alice Springs if she has to spend time in prison.

But Jon Tippett QC said home detention was preferable because Rudd's former occupation would make it hard for her behind bars.

A former prison guard, Rudd pleaded guilty to a dozen charges in relation to a corruption ring.

Rudd passed messages between inmates in Berrimah jail, told a woman how to smuggle drugs into prison and was found with ecstasy and ice in her underwear.
