Woman stand trial for killing ex's fiancee

A woman who allegedly stabbed her ex-lover's fiancee in a Sydney unit has been committed to stand trial for her murder.

Manisha Patel, 32, has been charged with murdering 28-year-old Purvi Joshi, whose body was discovered by her fiance in her Kyeemagh apartment in southern Sydney on the morning of July 30 last year.

Police say Patel had been a former lover of the fiance.

The extent of Ms Joshi's injuries and details of the cause of her death were revealed at Patel's committal hearing on Monday.

Forensic pathologist Dr Kendall Bailey said the 28-year-old had likely died from a combination of compression on her neck and smothering.

Injuries to her face were suggestive of smothering, while small blood vessels in her face had also ruptured, indicating pressure had been placed on her neck, she said.

Ms Joshi also had two stab wounds to the abdomen.

"They were inflicted either shortly before death or shortly after. It is not possible to know which," Dr Bailey said.

Following the brief hearing Magistrate John Andrews committed Patel to stand trial.

"I'm of the view that the prosecution evidence is capable of satisfying a jury when properly instructed that the accused committed an indictable offence," he said.

Patel made no expression as the decision was handed down.

She is set to be arraigned in February in the Supreme Court.
