A male driver who was allegedly more than three times over the limit has been charged over the death of a female pedestrian in Sydney's south.

The driver allegedly ran a red light on the Princes Highway at Wolli Creek just before 6pm on Wednesday, hitting a 22-year-old woman who police say was found unconscious in the middle of the road.

A 35-year-old driver of the ute was found near the accident site and arrested by police when he allegedly refused a roadside breath test.

A mandatory blood and alcohol testing of the man later returned a positive reading of .199, police said.
