Woman dies following NSW house fire

A woman has died in hospital after being caught in a house fire near Newcastle.

Firefighters called to a house fire at Karog Street in Pelican, Lake Macquarie, on Sunday found the 63-year-old woman and sole occupant unconscious inside.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital and then airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital, where she died, police said on Tuesday.

An 18-year-old man who tried to rescue the woman before firefighters arrived was treated for smoke inhalation and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Police do not believe the fire is suspicious.
