A woman has been charged with murder following a fatal house fire in the Riverina region of NSW last year.

Emergency services were called to the Kooringal home in Wagga Wagga early on February 25 after a 41-year-old woman was awoken by the smell of smoke.

She managed to escape uninjured but a second woman, 36, was still inside. Her body was discovered after the blaze was extinguished.

Following a police strike force investigation, a 47-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday morning at a home in the nearby suburb of Tolland.

She has since been charged with murder and destroying or damaging property with an intent to endanger life.

Police allege the woman attended the Kooringal home in the early hours of the morning and set fire to a lounge at the front of the property before fleeing.

She's been refused bail ahead of a scheduled appearance at Wagga Wagga Local Court later on Thursday.
