A man has been charged over a sexual assault in Sydney more than two decades ago after investigations were reopened because of fresh DNA analysis.

Back in 1994, in the early hours of August 20, a 20-year-old woman was walking through Mortdale in Sydney's south when she was grabbed from behind, forced to the ground and sexually assaulted by a man, who then fled.

Following advancements in DNA analysis technology, a 55-year-old Granville man was charged on Friday over the alleged sexual assault.
