A woman has narrowly escaped injury after her car became stuck on railway tracks and was hit by a train on the NSW Central Coast.

The 65-year-old's car was stuck on a level crossing on Rawson Road at Woy Woy about 6pm on Friday when the boom gates came down for an oncoming train, police say.

She got out but couldn't move the car off the tracks despite help from members of the public.
