The group of about five men then assaulted him, police said.

He ran into bushland and then flagged down a passing police car at 11.40pm yesterday.

He was given first aid and taken to Byron Bay Hospital.

He was transferred to Tweed Valley Hospital in a serious but stable condition with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and spinal injuries.

Police say two of those involved in the fight are believed to be aged about 16 or 17.

Police are investigating and looking for dash cam or mobile phone footage.
