Tougher jail terms for NSW gun crims

Criminals who fire guns to evade arrest and gangsters who carry out drive-by shootings will face tougher penalties under laws set to go before NSW parliament.

The government has announced it will add five firearms offences to the standard non-parole period scheme, which guides judges when deciding minimum jail terms criminals must serve.

The existing standard non-parole period will also be lengthened for two more gun offences.

"The NSW government's message to criminals with a gun and a grudge is that communities reject their actions and we will back our police who are doing an excellent job at tackling gun crime," Police Minister Troy Grant said in a statement on Monday.

The government said the planned laws were in line with NSW Sentencing Council recommendations.

NEW STANDARD MINIMUMS

* Discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest - nine years

* Discharge firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm - nine years

* Fire at a building with reckless disregard for safety (organised criminal activity) - six years

* Fire at a building with reckless disregard for safety during public disorder - six years

* Fire at a building with reckless disregard for safety - five years

* Unauthorised possession or use of a firearm - four years (up from three)

* Unauthorised possession or use of a prohibited weapon - five years (up from three)
