More than half a billion dollars is waiting to be claimed by New South Wales residents.

The stack of cash, totalling over $570 million, has accrued from unclaimed refunds, share dividends, commissions, bonds, uncashed cheques, or unclaimed money from the sale of a property.

Finance Minister Courtney Houssos said the cash had been left unclaimed for a number of reasons.

"This might be because someone has changed their name... or changed their address," she said.

"We want to give it back to you before Christmas."

The areas with the most unclaimed cash include the inner south, North Sydney and Hornsby, the Inner southwest, Eastern Suburbs and Inner West.

"We know there are lots of families doing it tough after so many successive interest rate rises," Houssos said.

"That's why we encourage you to go onto the Revenue NSW website and see if some of the unclaimed money is yours."

How to claim lost money

Claiming lost money costs nothing.

Residents just have to go to the Revenue NSW Website and click on the "unclaimed money" tab on the top right of the page.

Follow the prompts to see if you've lost any money.
