Terror reminder for NSW school vigilance

Schools across NSW have been urged to report anti-social behaviour following an increased terror alert and reports of teenagers heading overseas to join terrorist groups.

The NSW Department of Education and Communities has issued advice to staff to "exercise vigilance" and report anti-social behaviour, a department spokeswoman said on Sunday.

Principals have been told they can refer to Secure NSW, a government website with information on the state's approach to countering terrorism.

The spokeswoman said the advice followed a meeting with independent and Catholic schools earlier this month to discuss the National Terrorism Public Alert level, which was raised from medium to high in September.

It followed a video showing former Condell Park High School student Abdullah Elmir as the new face of the Islamic State militants.

The 17-year-old has appeared in a YouTube video warning world leaders of the jihadist group's resolve.

NSW Secondary Principals' Council president Lila Mularczyk said the advice was a reminder of already existing procedures for anti-social behaviour.

"That may include anything that is disruptive behaviour in class or not abiding by the local school expectations of behaviour," she said.
