A teenager is being hailed a hero after pulling a man from a burning house in Sydney's west.

Police said the 17-year-old boy was riding his bike home through Berala on Tuesday afternoon when he saw smoke coming from a home.

After extreme conditions prevented him from getting inside, he walked around the side of the house and saw a man banging on a window.

The teenager broke the window and pulled the man to safety.

Fire services arrived shortly afterwards and extinguished the fire.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment. No one else was injured.

Police say the teenager is likely to be nominated for an award in recognition of his bravery.
