A teenager has been stabbed numerous times in the back and stomach in the driveway of his home in Sydney's west.

Police say that at about 8.30pm on Saturday the 17-year-old was waiting in Fairfield to be picked up by friends when he was approached by a man known to him and stabbed.

His attacker ran to a waiting vehicle with a driver inside and was chased by two witnesses who had arrived to pick up their friend.

Police say they tried to stop the man without success and he allegedly swung a knife towards them before getting into the Toyota Hilux and being driven away.

The 17-year-old was taken to hospital and is believed to be in a serious but stable condition.

An 18-year-old man later attended Fairfield Police Station and has been charged with wound with intent to cause actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
