A second person has died after a car that was carrying four young people veered off the road and hit a tree in central western NSW.

The crash on the highway near Bathurst on Tuesday night killed the front-seat passenger, an 18-year-old woman.

A 21-year-old male, who was a back seat passenger, was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital but has died overnight, police said.

The 24-year-old male driver and a 31-year-old woman sitting in the back seat are in hospital with serious injuries.

The four were travelling in a Ford Festiva when it hit a tree on the Great Western Highway near Yetholme around 10.20pm.
