A teenager has been seriously injured in a fall from a cliff at Windang Island, south of Wollongong.

About 9.10pm on Friday, a 15-year-old boy fell about 12 metres down a cliff as he attempted to retrieve a dropped mobile phone. He landed on a rock platform below.

He was winched to safety and taken to the Sydney Children's Hospital where he was treated for fractured ribs and a fractured wrist.
