A taxi driver has been assaulted and robbed of his mobile phone during a road rage incident in Sydney's east.

Police say that at about 12.30pm on Friday the 50-year-old cabbie was driving a woman with her disabled daughter when a man walked in front of the taxi on Anzac Parade in Kingsford, prompting the driver to sound his horn.

A short time later, the taxi driver noticed the same man travelling behind him in a ute, then driving beside the taxi and throwing objects at the vehicle.

Both vehicles stopped on Anzac Parade where the driver of the ute approached and kicked the taxi, before assaulting the taxi driver a number of times and taking his mobile phone before leaving the scene.
