Tax-dodging bikies targeted in NSW

More than 200 outlaw motorcycle gang members have been targeted in NSW for dodging their tax responsibilities.

Officers from the Australian Taxation Office and NSW police issued more than 200 notices to individuals and businesses across the state for failing to comply with legal obligations including lodgement of returns, paying due taxes and correctly returning their acquired income.

The one-week crackdown, involving millions of dollars, was part of joint agency task force Operation Morpheus that aims to detect, deter and disrupt outlaw motorcycle gang members and their families, police said on Monday.

Operation chair NSW Police Detective Superintendent Deb Wallace says they will continue to target criminal wealth in order to break up outlaw motorcycle gangs.

"These gangs rely on money to continue their illegal activities, so disrupting their resources is an example of another way law enforcement agencies are acting to dismantle their operations," she said.

An ATO spokesman said those involved should "pay their fair share of tax" and be held to account for defrauding the system.
