Veteran radio broadcaster Alan Jones says he was at death's door following a nasty infection that put him in intensive care.

Australia's top-rating radio host, who has struggled with his health for the past six months, is at home recuperating after being hospitalised for a week with an e-coli infection.

Jones, 75, told 2GB listeners over the phone from home on Monday he will spend one more week off air.

He was admitted to St Vincent's Hospital last week and rushed to intensive care when his blood pressure dropped dangerously low.

His doctor told him "you were at the exit door".

Jones took four months off from his 2GB breakfast program in November for operations on his neck and back.
