Sydney triple axe attacker awaits sentence

A young transgender woman who claimed she was experiencing a psychosis when she swung an axe into three strangers has failed to convince a jury her behaviour was due to mental illness.

Evie Amati was found guilty in the NSW District Court on Friday of two counts of wounding with intent to murder and one count of attempting to wound with intent to murder.

The 26-year-old swung the axe into Enmore 7-Eleven customers Benjamin Rimmer and Sharon Hacker on January 7 in 2017, and twice struck a backpack used by pedestrian Shane Redwood to cushion Amati's blows.

She will face a sentence hearing before Judge Mark Williams on September 12.
