Sydney thunderstorm warning remains

More thunderstorms are on their way after a spectacular lightning storm caused damage across parts of Sydney overnight.

State Emergency Service received more than 180 calls for help on Wednesday night, with Sydney facing the brunt of the chaos.

"We are still in that risk area at the moment," the spokeswoman added.

"The strip from the Hunter Region right through to the Sydney metro were the worst impacted areas," a spokeswoman from SES told AAP on Thursday.

Liverpool and Bankstown were swamped by the storm with a number of homes damaged by fallen trees and branches.

"It was a bit of a bullseye area there."

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in place on Thursday, according to the weather bureau.

SES ADVICE TO RESIDENTS

* Keep indoors and away from windows

* Stay away from broken power lines

* Keep clear of flooded areas
