Sydney shovel attack suspect denied bail

A man accused of attacking a woman with a shovel during an attempted car-jacking in Sydney's west has been denied bail.

Bassan Boustani, who's on a methadone program, didn't appear or apply for bail during a brief mention at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

It was formally denied by Magistrate George Zdenkowski.

Police allege the 32-year-old approached a car on Thursday night at Dundas, near Parramatta, hit it with a shovel and yelled at the woman driver, telling her to get out.

He then allegedly opened the driver's door and struck the woman, 56, in the head and arms before stealing her mobile phone.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to cuts on her face, nose and arms.

Officers found Boustani on the same street about 45 minutes after he allegedly attacked the woman.

They took a mobile phone from him and charged him with robbery armed with an offensive weapon, aggravated assault with intent to take motor vehicle armed with weapon and revocation of a parole warrant.

He will next appear at Parramatta Local Court on October 29 via audio visual link.
