Sydneysiders are right to feel increasingly crowded with new figures showing the harbour city's population has officially topped the five million mark.

At the end of June 2016, some 5,005,400 people lived in Sydney - up 82,800 from the previous year - according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released on Thursday.

It took Sydney almost 30 years - from 1971 to 2000 - to grow from three million to four million people, but only half that time to reach the five million mark, ABS demography director Beidar Cho said in a statement.
