Sydney pharmacist gets bail pending appeal

A Sydney pharmacist jailed one week ago for illegally supplying a cervical cancer vaccine for overseas export has been granted bail.

Kathy Gong, 35, appeared via video link in Downing Centre District Court on Wednesday when her bail application was unopposed by the Crown.

Judge Helen Syme granted bail on conditions including that Gong report twice daily to police, surrender her passport and live at a fixed address on Sydney's lower north shore.

Gong's parents have also agreed to provide $20,000 surety ahead of her release from Silverwater prison.

The pharmacist was sentenced on November 28 to eight months in jail with a six-month non-parole period after pleading guilty to three charges of wholesale supply of certain substances.

Gong supplied 2432 doses of Gardasil 9 to her co-accused over three occasions between April and August 2018, the court heard last Wednesday.

They were then sent via air freight to Hong Kong.

Gong has admitted she made a profit of about $30,000, which she shared with another chemist.

A sentence appeal, immediately lodged by her lawyer last week, will be heard on January 23.
