Sydney pen-gun syndicate arrests

Two people have been arrested in Sydney's southwest after investigations into an alleged pen-gun syndicate.

Police said the pair were arrested on Wednesday at a car park in Carnes Hill, where officers also seized three pen guns from inside the vehicle the men were sitting in.

A 27-year-old from West Hoxton was charged with numerous firearm offences and refused bail. He is due to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Thursday.

A 24-year-old was released without charge.

Police launched an operation earlier this year to investigate a syndicate allegedly involving in the manufacture and supply of pen guns, and Detective Superintendent Mick Plotecki said Wednesday's arrest would seriously disrupt the group's operations.

"These weapons have been made by people with no qualifications or skills in firearm manufacturing," Det Supt Plotecki said.

"They are crudely built and, as a result, very dangerous - both for the person firing the weapon and anyone in the near vicinity."
