A 21-year-old pedestrian is recovering in hospital after he was run over by a car in Sydney's south.

The pedestrian was taken to St Georges Hospital in a critical condition after a 69-year-old driver reversed his car into a signpost, which knocked the younger man to the ground before he was then run over by the car in Narwee on Thursday.

The man is recovering in hospital and is now in a serious but stable condition, a spokeswoman said on Friday.
