Sydney oil spill leaves more than a dozen birds covered in diesel
A suspected oil spill in inner Sydney has left more than a dozen birds covered in diesel.
A member of the public sparked the investigation after reporting a suspected diesel spill in the Alexandria canal, which saw at least 15 waterbirds, including six pelicans, covered in oil.

Animal rescue services received multiple calls of birds covered in oil yesterday across Sydney before identifying an oil spill in the Alexandria Canal, near Huntley Street, as the main cause.
While the cause of the spill is unknown, people are being asked to keep an eye out for any birds that may appear affected or discoloured.
Crews are now on scene working to contain the slick, while wildlife rescuers track impacted pelicans and egrets as far away as Narrabeen, Centennial Park, Hurlstone Park, and Wolli Creek.

Diesel impacts the waterproof nature of bird feathers, causing them to get wet more easily, making them more prone to hypothermia and other illnesses.
Rescued birds will be taken to Taronga Zoo to be washed and treated.
