A man accused of the bashing murder of a Sydney woman has been committed to stand trial.

Jamie Edward May, 39, was charged with murder after 61-year-old Judith Townsend was found with severe head injuries at a home in Redfern.

Ms Townsend was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where she died a short time later, police say.

May indicated on Monday that he would plead guilty to the manslaughter of Ms Townsend but not her murder.

However, he was committed to stand trial and is expected to appear at the Supreme Court in October for arraignment.

The injured Ms Townsend was found by police who responded to reports of a woman being assaulted at the Redfern home in April 2014.

May was arrested nearby.
