Sydney man charged over bashing pensioner

A young man who is charged with brutally bashing a Sydney grandfather was arrested on his way to his own grandfather's funeral.

The 22-year-old is accused of attacking 76-year-old pensioner Ernie Haynes in Bass Hill early on Sunday, pushing him into a fence and punching him repeatedly in the face before stealing around $400 and scratchie cards from his wallet.

"I went out to get the paper and `bang'," Mr Haynes told Network Seven News from his hospital bed.

He was left with severe cuts, grazes and bruising to his face.

The suspect was arrested on Monday near Rookwood cemetery .

He has been charged with aggravated robbery with wounding, and will appear in Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday.
