A man involved in the shooting of a young boy in Sydney last week has been charged with firearm offences and hindering a police investigation.

It was initially reported the five-year-old was hit in the hip by a bullet fired from outside his Lurnea home last Monday night.

Rather than calling an ambulance, the boy's parents drove him five kilometres to Liverpool Hospital where staff alerted police.

The five-year-old suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

A 41-year-old Lurnea man, thought to be the boy's father, was arrested and charged on Monday with possessing a prohibited firearm, possessing ammunition without authority, and hindering a police investigation.

He was granted bail to appear in Liverpool Local Court on May 24.
