Sydney man admits dangerous driving

A young driver has pleaded guilty after a teenager was left brain-damaged after being dragged by a car and left for dead on a Sydney street.

Bashar Hawchar, 20, was due to stand trial in Campbelltown District Court on Monday but pleaded guilty to dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

CCTV caught Samantha Giufre, then 18, being dragged by a car before falling from the vehicle on September 7, 2014, at Casula.

Hawchar has also admitted failing to stop and assist after the incident.

Ms Giufre was in hospital for months after suffering multiple fractures to her skull and face, along with bleeding on the brain.

Hawchar, who is on bail, will face a sentence hearing on February 24.

According to the agreed statement of facts, Hawchar and Ms Giufre knew each other.

"There was animosity between them due to the existence of a possible drug debt owed by the victim to the offender," the statement said.

Hawchar was sitting behind the wheel with the engine running when Ms Giufre was partly inside the car talking to a passenger.

He then began to drive down the road, causing Ms Giufre to grip on to the car.

"Witnesses saw the car travel some distance down the road with the victim's body and legs hanging from the open window being dragged along the roadway."
