A marine discovery centre, featuring a virtual underwater dive, has opened its doors in Sydney Harbour.

School children and sea life lovers will be able to explore Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) research projects, such as a study of how sharks socialise, alongside an interactive museum of what lies beneath the city's waters.

"I saw everything, I like the cuttlefish and the shark, when you were right under it," said 10-year-old Jude Baille after taking a turn on the virtual dive in Chowder Bay on Monday.

NSW Minister for Primary Industries Anthony Roberts said the Discovery Centre displayed ongoing scientific projects in a fun environment.

"The kids are the excuse to come here," he said at the launch.

"We have a beautiful harbour, we take so much for granted."

The centre will also be open to the public on the second Sunday of each month.
