A Sydney man who stabbed his daughter to death has been jailed for at least four years and nine months.

Kingsford man Djuro Ukropina fatally stabbed 29-year-old Ivana Ukropina in the back inside their unit in November 2013.

Ukropina had pleaded guilty to manslaughter for causing her death, with his lawyers arguing his severe depression and psychosis clouded his judgment at the time of the attack.

Ukropina grabbed a knife from the kitchen and wounded his daughter without warning following an argument about taking his medication.

He remembers taking the knife but can't explain why he killed his daughter or chased her outside their unit, Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court heard on Thursday.

Judge Andrew Scott said it was clear Ukropina had suffered a severe mental impairment that diminished his responsibility for the death.

Mr Scott said it was an isolated albeit catastrophic loss of control and the offender had a good chance of rehabilitation.

He said Ukropina had engaged with treatment, accepted responsibility and demonstrated genuine contrition and remorse.

Ukropina will be eligible for parole in August 2018.
