A 22-year-old man has allegedly attacked two cyclists with a machete after punching a man in the face in Sydney.

A 20-year-old man was punched in the face in the inner-city suburb of Ultimo around 2.20am on Saturday as he walked to his bike with a fast food delivery, police said.

Another man was also punched and then hit on the head with a machete after chasing down the fleeing assailant on his bike, according to NSW Police.

He was wearing a helmet at the time but sustained a cut on his arm.

A third man, who chased the alleged attacker on his bike, was also hit on the head with the machete, police said.

The 22-year-old was arrested a short time later and charged with assault and using a weapon to prevent lawful detention.

He was refused bail in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday and is due to appear in the Central Local Court on January 13.
