Sydney bars shut after 'drugs, overdoses'

Two Sydney karaoke bars have been temporarily shut down following allegations the venues allowed drug trafficking to take place and failed to do anything about several suspected overdoses.

NSW Police allege that at one of the bars in the city's innerwest - Queen KTV in Ashfield - illegal drugs were detected on numerous occasions and there were incidents of suspected overdoses taking place on or near the premises.

The bar also allowed minors to become intoxicated, continued to supply alcohol outside trading hours and failed to "implement strategies to respond to identified risks to patrons and the community," the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority said.

The bar will be slapped with a six-month closure order from 9pm on Friday, it said.

Another 72-hour closure will also be placed on the K1 Karaoke Lounge in Haymarket from 12.30pm on Friday to 12.30pm on Monday April 18.

Police allege the venue allowed illegal drugs such as cocaine to be used on the premises and traded outside its authorised hours on several occasions.

The liquor and gaming authority said it is considering imposing a long-term closure on the bar following an application from NSW Police.
