Anzac Day march route changed in Sydney

A change to the route of Sydney's Anzac Day march is unlikely to faze veterans, the RSL says.

More than 20,000 veterans of current and past wars will march down Elizabeth Street from 9am on April 25 in a permanent shift to avoid the light rail construction on George Street.

NSW RSL president Rod White says the traditional starting point in Martin Place will remain and veterans don't only have an affinity with George Street.

He said troops in World War I would disembark at Central Station, march down College and Elizabeth streets to board ships berthed at Woolloomooloo, bound for war.

"I think we are able to adapt to the other precincts in this great city that provide not only a comfortable route ... but an Act of Remembrance," he said.

"More and more of our older veterans and even some younger will be in wheelchairs, and this route is very comfortable for wheelchair movement."

Marchers will observe an eyes left command as they pass the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park ahead of a commemoration service at 12:30pm.

NSW Veterans Affairs Minister David Elliott said the change provides a chance to honour the monument, which serves as a "very, very important part of our Anzac story".

"This should not be seen as an inconvenience, this should be seen as an opportunity," he said.
