Suspended sentence for NSW train crash mum

A NSW mother who drove her three daughters into the path of a freight train, with two suffering critical injuries as a result, has been handed a suspended jail sentence.

The woman, who can't be named for legal reasons, had pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm after the June 2016 crash on the state's mid-north coast.

Judge Roy Ellis on Friday sentenced the single mother to 15 months and 18 months in jail for each child that was critically injured but suspended the sentence given her need to care for them.

One daughter still needs almost constant care due to a brain injury suffered in the accident, the Newcastle District Court heard.
