Stubborn NSW motorists block off bridge for half-an-hour

Two motorists blocked traffic for 30-minutes on a single lane bridge in NSW because both were arguing they had right-of-way.

Police had to be called to the Victoria Bridge in Picton, southwest of Sydney, yesterday afternoon because the drivers of a silver car and a black 4WD refused to back down.

"I spoke to both motorists and they both refused to move because they both believed they had entered the bridge first and had right of way," witness Daniel Valenzi told the Macarthur Chronicle.

"The traffic was banked up to both main roads with every third car turning around."

Police were forced to end the standoff by issuing $253 fines to both drivers.

"The drivers ended up waiting longer than it would have taken one of them to reverse," Camden Police crime manager Jayne Doherty told the Macarthur Advertiser.

"They wasted their time and other motorists' time."

Mr Valenzi's video has now been seen hundreds of thousands of times on Facebook.

The Victoria Bridge is one of the oldest timber trestle bridges left in Australia.

The 80m-long bridge was opened in 1897.
