Spring storms roll through New South Wales

The first spring storms have formed over New South Wales, in a sign of tumultuous weather to come.

A trough and front are charging eastward, with a line of storms developing along the trough near midday over the centre of the state.

The first storms have already rolled through Nyngan, Narromine and Cowra. Unfortunately they are not bringing any decent totals for the rain-starved landscape.

As the afternoon progresses this line of storms will focus over the North West Slopes and Plains and Central Tablelands, before contracting to the northeast in the evening, possibly spreading into Queensland's Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

Storms could become severe this afternoon with damaging winds, so it is important to keep track of the warnings in your area.

This spring we are likely to see more thunderstorm activity than usual across New South Wales, most likely in the north.

Southern Queensland is also likely to see more storm activity than usual.

The reason for more thunderstorms is that we are in a neutral El Nino pattern and have warmer than usual sea surface temperatures along the eastern seaboard.

Unfortunately for those keen for clear skies and sunshine, today is merely a taster of what's to come.
