Snap protest held in Sydney’s west to ‘condemn’ government for ‘brutal’ raids

More than 100 people gathered at Lakemba train station in Sydney’s west tonight, angered at today's anti-terror raids.

The protesters carry signs reading "Stop terrorising Muslims" and "We won't stand by as Muslims are vilified".

They believe this morning's anti-terror operation that saw 15 people detained in north-western Sydney were not about targeting alleged terrorists, but about targeting Muslims.

The signs featured the logo of hardline organisation Hizb Ut-Tahrir.

"We've all seen what has taken place this morning," Hizb Ut-Tahrir speaker Uthman Badar told the crowd.

"We are not here tonight to determine who is guilty and who is innocent, they are processes for the relevant authorities, but we have great concern... about these processes being carried out properly.

"There are people out there who would like to convey this point, this propaganda that somehow Muslims are a threat to this country, and the Muslim community is a threat.

"We are not here to disrupt security, Muslims are as much concerned about security and peace as anyone else, but at the same time we are not fools."

A Facebook page wasset up for the protest, calling on “Muslims and non-Muslims” to “stand as one tonight and denounce this demonisation and oppression of Muslims”.

“Raise your voice as one and do the least that can be done: condemn the government for its brutality,” it reads.

The page invited more than 3000 people to attend the event in response to anti-terror raids across Sydney and Brisbane today.

Fifteen people were detained after more than 800 police officers searched 15 homes and 10 cars in north-western Sydney.

Two people have so far been charged following today’s raids.

Omarjan Azari faced Central Local Court today charged with serious terrorism-related offences.

9NEWS understands he is accused of plotting to abduct people off the streets and decapitate them in a manner similar to the recent ISIL beheadings of US and UK citizens in Syria.

A second man has been charged with possessing ammunition without a license and unauthorised possession of a prohibited weapon.

There was a minimal police presence at the peaceful protest.

More than 200 police are on the street across Sydney tonight as part of the ongoing Operation Hammerhead, focused on high-visbility policing following today's anti-terror operation.
