'Slapping therapist' to remain in custody

So-called "slapping therapist" Hong Chi Xiao remains in custody after he was extradited to Australia and charged with the manslaughter of a six-year-old diabetic boy.

The Chinese national was on Thursday refused bail after appearing via video link at Sydney's Central Local Court.

54-year-old Xiao is accused of having an influence on the boy's death by allegedly advising his parents to stop giving him medication during a south Sydney self-healing conference in 2015.

It's alleged that advice ultimately led to the boy's death.

Xiao has promoted the controversial practice of Paida Lajin, which advocates slapping skin to release toxins from patients.

The six-year-old, a type-1 diabetic, was found unconscious in a Hurstville hotel after his parents took him to the self-healing conference conducted by Xiao.

The matter will return to court on October 24.
