A Sydney shopping centre that was evacuated when its roof partially caved in during the Sydney storms says it is reopening for business.

Heavy rain and record wind gusts caused the roof of Westfield Bondi Junction to partially collapse on Wednesday morning, forcing an evacuation of shoppers during the busiest time of the year.

Repair teams worked through the night and Westfield said individual shop tenants would decide whether to open at the start of trade at 9.30am.

They said they expected only one store, a restaurant, to remain closed.

The cinema will open at some point in the afternoon.

"Centre management teams will continue to work hard to restore business as usual for shoppers and retailers in the lead-up to Christmas with extended trading hours already in place," the company said in a statement.
