A 60-year-old man has been dragged from his four-wheel drive in Sydney and allegedly assaulted by a group of teenagers, who made off in the vehicle.

Seven teenagers are in police custody after officers used road spikes to stop the 4WD at Dunmore, south of Wollongong, on Saturday night.

The man told police he was approached by up to four people, one with a knife, at Dulwich Hill about 8.45pm.

He said he was pulled out of the 4WD and kicked and punched to the ground.

The vehicle was spotted on the M5 heading south just before 9pm and later on the Princes Highway, before police managed to stop it less than an hour later.

Six males, including the 19-year-old accused driver, and a 16-year-old girl were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station to speak with officers.

One of the boys was taken to Shellharbour Hospital as a precaution.
