Second arrest after Sydney crime spree

A second man has been charged over the armed robberies of a bank and golf club in Sydney's west last year.

Parts of Fairfield East were locked down and riot police surrounded the suburban pocket in October while officers searched for four armed men.

The dramatic scenes came after two armed hold-ups - one unsuccessful - two attempted car-jackings and a police pursuit.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on Thursday at Rosemeadow, following the arrest of a 21-year-old in Port Macquarie in January.

The bandits unsuccessfully attempted to rob a Commonwealth Bank at Chester Hill on the morning of October 31.

A short time later, three men with armed guns and a hammer burst into the Rosnay Golf Club in Auburn.

The alleged bandits threatened staff before fleeing with cash in a stolen car, which was driven by a fourth man, police say.

Cops chased the men until the getaway car crashed into another car at Villawood.

The men then fled on foot at Fairfield East and made two failed attempts to carjack other vehicles.

Despite a massive search, they managed to slip through the clutches of police.

The 28-year-old was charged with armed robbery and participating in a criminal group.

He is due to face Campbelltown Local Court on Friday.

The 21-year-old man's case is before the courts.

Detectives are still hunting the other men involved.
