Two people have avoided serious injury after crash-landing their light plane in a national park southwest of Sydney.

The Jabiru craft went down in a small river in Nattai National Park after the pilot issued a mayday call at 3.15pm, police say.

The pair were winched to safety by helicopter paramedics.

The crumpled plane remains partly submerged.

Both occupants were taken to Bankstown airport, with minor injuries, for medical treatment.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority says the pair had activated a personal locator beacon, which resulted in a quick rescue.
