A search is underway for a man who jumped off a bridge into a river in northern NSW and failed to surface.

The 22-year-old's family told police he leaped into the Richmond River from the Adam Street bridge in the town of Coraki at about 5.40am and has not been seen since.

Queensland police divers will be joining NSW Police, a rescue helicopter and State Emergency Service crews in the search this afternoon, a NSW police spokeswoman said.
