Former attorney general Philip Ruddock will chair an advisory board of the first think tank set up to study the relationship between Australia and China.

Mr Ruddock has been appointed to help oversee the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney, established in 2014, following his decision not to contest the 2016 federal election after 43 years in parliament.

Professor Glenn Wightwick, UTS deputy vice-chancellor, on Sunday welcomed Mr Ruddock's appointment in a statement that highlighted his wealth of China expertise and links to the country.
