Ron Medich starts 30-year jail term

Sydney millionaire Ron Medich has begun serving his 30-year minimum jail term for the execution-style murder of a hated business foe and the intimidation of his widow.

The 70-year-old property developer was sentenced on Thursday to a total of 39 years, with a non-parole period of 30 years, by Justice Geoffrey Bellew.

The murder demonstrated "objective criminality and moral culpability of the highest order" while the intimidation had been "breathtakingly callous", the judge said in the NSW Supreme Court.

Medich was found guilty in April of the contract murder of Michael McGurk, who was shot dead outside his Sydney home in September 2009, and the intimidation of Kimberley McGurk almost a year later.

He was found to have directed and financed the murder and intimidation, after becoming embroiled in ongoing and protracted legal battles with Mr McGurk involving millions of dollars.

If Medich doesn't die in jail, he will be eligible for release on parole in February 2048 - two months before he turns 100.
