Rescheduled NSW council elections date set

A new date for NSW local government elections has been set after they were postponed earlier this year over the coronavirus.

The state government on Friday announced council elections will be held on September 4 next year, 12 months later than originally planned.

Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock confirmed councillors would continue to hold their civic offices until the rescheduled elections in September 2021.

"Local government elections are a vital part of the democratic process, ensuring local councils are accountable to their local communities," Ms Hancock said in a statement.

"The decision to postpone elections was not taken lightly and was made to provide certainty for councils and communities across the state."

The NSW government announced in March that the elections scheduled for September this year would be delayed by at least 12 months.
