Man facing multiple charges after Maroubra standoff

A man is facing multiple charges after a standoff with police at a unit complex in Sydney’s east yesterday.

Heavily armed police surrounded the Portland Crescent apartment complex in Maroubra at about 10am (AEDT), after reports of a man brandishing a gun.

It is believed a woman who lived in the building was confronted by the alleged offender and ran for help.

Several streets were blocked off as police moved in and negotiated with two men inside the apartment.

At about 4.30pm both men emerged from the unit, with one only wearing underwear and a hooded jumper. Police quickly handcuffed his hands behind his back and led him away.

Police said they were forced to deploy a Taser to subdue the other man.

A crime scene was established and police say a replica firearm was seized after it was found inside the unit.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with nine offences, including aggravated break and enter, common assault, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and detaining a person with intent to obtain advantage.

He has been refused bail and is set to appear in Waverley Local Court later today.

A 31-year-old man was released without charge.
